WordTracker - Keyword Tool

Among most SEO experts, WordTracker is the keyword tool of choice. It is widely considered the industry standard when it comes to keyword research. Having said that, WordTracker cannot be considered completely accurate and precise - it is merely a guide that can aide in making more informed keyword and content decisions.

Using WordTracker, a user can view the approximate number of searches in a day for a given term on a number of search engines. In addition, competition levels can also be roughly calculated. Another number given is the KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index). Essentially, this number is a ratio of the two aforementioned statistics. The higher the KEI, the more likely you are to rank higher. The reason can be attributed to a ‘relatively’ high number of searches compared to a low level of competition.

Because WordTracker doesn’t source numbers directly from the search engines, hard numbers cannot be tabulated (as mentioned above). Fortunately, relative calculations and estimates can be made and used when choosing targeted keywords and phrases.

Although WordTracker is a great tool, I highly recommend using other means of keyword research as well including competitor keyword analysis. Customer profiling and industry insight can also help determine suitable phrases. After all, the end goal is to drive additional qualified search traffic and WordTracker can only do so much.
